The Indian sari is an article of clothing worn traditionally by the women in India. It consists of one large piece of cloth, rectangular in shape, and averaging in length to about six yards. The cloth is woven from cotton, then wrapped and draped about the body, to end at the feet.
The sari, which originates from India, is more than five thousand years old. India is the first place to grow cotton, therefore using it to create their cloth for the sari. The mention of the sari in the Vedas, which is the oldest existing text, shows its true historical longevity and proof of origin.
The traditional sari is more than just clothing. There was significant meaning and symbolism attached to the garment in the form of different colors or designs. The various patterns and colors of the sari depicted such information as beliefs, virtues, and the region the person came from.
There were numerous designs and symbols used on the traditional sari. The paisly and fish were used to show fertility. They also represented the abundance of food and children. These patterns were mostly seen in the coastal regions where the people survived on fish.
Designs in the form of an Elephant symbolized water, fertility, wealth and good luck. It also exemplifies the god Ganesh who is the remover of obstacles. The Conch was also a symbol of the gods and represented the bugle used in war.
The use of colors in the sari has also had specific meaning behind them. Red, used in the traditional sense is associated with the warrior and a sign of valor. However, today it is worn by Indian brides and is a favored color by many, because of the sexual and emotional implications attached to it.
White was usually associated with priests because it is believed to be impure to change the sari by use of color or stitching. White is also a symbol of purity and mourning, therefore widows were known to wear the white sari.
The color black was used to show sorrow or bad luck. It was probably for this reason that very few saris were made of black. In contrast, there were many saris made of blue because of the association to the working class. Farmers, weavers and manual laborers were said to have worn blue.

The sari is India's traditional dress. For more than 5000 years this elegant garment has been the mainstay of a Indian ladies wardrobe. A sari is simply a lenght of fabric 6 yards long. The saree has a width of between 37 to 44 inches.
The Sari's origins are obscure because few records have survived through to modern times. We do know that Indian weavers were weaving cotton sari's during the time of the Indus Civilizations. This is about 2800 to 1200 BCE. There are records from North India, consisting of pottery showing a sari drapped lady from 100 BCE. There are other records of temple dancers from 250-200 BCE showing ladies wearing tightly draped sarees (making it easier to dance in).
Silk saree's were thougt to be produced later in India, mainly becaus the Indus valley civilaztion did not produce sufficient quantities of silk. Recent discoveries in Pakistan, near Harappa, show that there was silk production around 2000 BCE. In southern India, silk sarees were produced after 1000 BCE, in Tamil Nadu.
Hindu traders took the sari to Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Parts of Cambodia and Malysia. In Pakistan, there is a growing trend to ban the sari as it is considered " hindu dress", but many upper and middle class ladies wear the sari to formal occasions. In many parts of Pakistan, like Punjab, the sari is worn during the marriage ceremony.
Every Region of India has different types and styles of sari's and different methods of wearing (draping) sari's. In a further article I will delve into this in more detail. The most common styles are: Banarasi from Uttar Pradesh, Tussar Silk from Bihar, Bandhni from Gujarat and Rajastan, Paithani from Maharashtra, Patola from Gujarat and Kanjivaram from Tamil Nadu.
In a further article we will delve deeper into sari's from Gujarat and embroidered sarees from Gujarat and Lucknow. We will also discuss the modern designer sari trends in India.
