The sari is India's traditional dress. For more than 5000 years this elegant garment has been the mainstay of a Indian ladies wardrobe. A sari is simply a lenght of fabric 6 yards long. The saree has a width of between 37 to 44 inches.
The Sari's origins are obscure because few records have survived through to modern times. We do know that Indian weavers were weaving cotton sari's during the time of the Indus Civilizations. This is about 2800 to 1200 BCE. There are records from North India, consisting of pottery showing a sari drapped lady from 100 BCE. There are other records of temple dancers from 250-200 BCE showing ladies wearing tightly draped sarees (making it easier to dance in).
Silk saree's were thougt to be produced later in India, mainly becaus the Indus valley civilaztion did not produce sufficient quantities of silk. Recent discoveries in Pakistan, near Harappa, show that there was silk production around 2000 BCE. In southern India, silk sarees were produced after 1000 BCE, in Tamil Nadu.
Hindu traders took the sari to Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Parts of Cambodia and Malysia. In Pakistan, there is a growing trend to ban the sari as it is considered " hindu dress", but many upper and middle class ladies wear the sari to formal occasions. In many parts of Pakistan, like Punjab, the sari is worn during the marriage ceremony.
Every Region of India has different types and styles of sari's and different methods of wearing (draping) sari's. In a further article I will delve into this in more detail. The most common styles are: Banarasi from Uttar Pradesh, Tussar Silk from Bihar, Bandhni from Gujarat and Rajastan, Paithani from Maharashtra, Patola from Gujarat and Kanjivaram from Tamil Nadu.
In a further article we will delve deeper into sari's from Gujarat and embroidered sarees from Gujarat and Lucknow. We will also discuss the modern designer sari trends in India.
