HISTORY
metti in tamilnaduHindu women wear numerous decorative ornaments, and there is a reason behind each one. According to the old Sanskrit scriptures, a woman should wear 16 ornaments to beautify herself. The ornaments are kunguma pottu (bindhi), necklace, bracelet, earrings, bangles, rings, flowers in her hair, wrist bands, kohl, anklets, sandalwood paste, perfume, henna, metti, a long skirt, and a blouse. The garments should cover her body completely.
Metti are worn only by married Hindu women, particularly Brahmin women. They take the form of a two or three looped ring worn on the second toe. It is believed that wearing metti on both the feet regularizes the menstrual cycle of the married women, which in turn increases her chances of conceiving. It is said that a particular nerve in the second toe connects to the uterus and then passes through heart. It is also said that the friction of the ring while doing all sorts of day-to-day activities and while walking revitalizes the body and the reproductive organs.
Metti are always worn in silver, which is a good conductor of electricity. The silver is said to absorb polar energy from the earth and transfers it to the body, hence vitalizing and refreshing the whole body.
