The complexity began to unravel itself to me. The dexterity with which the fabric had managed to morph and shift without really changing, was an eye-opener in itself. Managing to wrap itself around women from all over the subcontinent, regardless of caste, race or creed was an amazing achievement. Through the use of three-dimensional design, the sari overcame these clinical challenges. The design of the sari does not stop at the sari itself. It takes on another layer as it is worn in different ways, and according to the body type of the woman who is wearing it. Which effectively means that every time a woman wears a sari, even if it is the same sari, it will be unique. Within every crease, every fold, there are codes. In fact, the entire design history of saris is a history of codes. Using colours, patterns, weaves, drape and fabric type, saris have been coded and tagged. From the slut to the saint, from the national leader to the beggar on the street, from the rich housewife in an apartment block to the daily labourer who works the street, the sari manages to be their companion, their confidante.
It's easy to get lost in the visual splendour of the sari. Not only in its final form, but also from its earliest organic origin. The birth of the silkworm, on its journey to becoming a beautiful moth, building the cocoon that is processed manually to painstakingly weaning out fine silk from the whirring of the charkhas, all across the village streets, the women drying, threading, looping silk. It is easy to get lost within the beauty well before it actually is put on a loom and given life. It is also easy to forget that the sari is no longer the costume of choice for urban India, which probably means that the sari is about to die. Our film begins here, as I follow Rii into the world of saris, its myths, the women who wear it and don't, its many hues and colours. As we celebrate the fabric, we also ask questions about the way women have been portrayed and treated in our patriarchal society. From the story of Draupadi and her sari to the recent spurt of rapes in the country, the subjugation of women has continued unabated. I wanted to move away from the classic observation documentary form and tell this story in another way. To somehow incorporate the idea of manipulated images, that surrounds us every day.
