THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K Sreedharan got a booking order for 30 Kuthampully sarees from a Non Resident Indian settled in Canada last year. The NRI's only condition was that the sarees should be genuine and spun at the local hand weaving unit at Thiruvillwamala in Palakkad district.
Sreedharan, who runs a small-scale unit here, says though he could label the sarees with his unit's manufacturing seal, he was unable to get a certification from the government: "I lost out the order because of this.''Not anymore. The Kuthampully sarees woven at this textile hamlet has now got exclusive Intellectual Property rights through Geographical Indications Act (GI). The much sought after GI registration is given by the Chennai- based Geographical Indications registry of Government of India for products which are manufactured in a particular area and has been exclusive to that region for many years.Handloom and textile director Sam C Ittcheriya told TOI after Balaramapuram sarees got GI registration two years ago, the department was pursuing hard to get exclusive intellectual rights for three other products, based in Ernakulam , Palakkad and Kannur district."We have now got GI mark for products like Kuthampully sarees, Chendamanglam sarees, Kannur furnishing,''he says.
