Vedic literature mentions the use of coarse cotton sarees worn by women. The idea then was to cover the body. To keep the body pure, not a single stitch was used. There was no fashion then. The trendy element evolved only in the last 200 years. So did a bit of stitching begin with use of blouses as the upper garment. This happened because of the foreign invasions. Women needed to cover themselves for protection during this period. The history of sarees since then reflects the influence of Mughals, British, Dutch and Portuguese women using chiffons.
The influences were first copied by royal women and then became popular with the masses. The queens and noble women were the models who made other women wear their styles. While the royal women used
rich fabrics like silk, ordinary women continued to use cotton. Silk made an entry when merchants started to travel to China. Silk was imported to make garments. Egyptian cotton was imported in bales. It is now ironical that now with better trade routes available silk is no longer imported. The Benarsi silk is sourced from south India, where there are different regions making classic silk sarees. The Chamundi, Kanjivaram and Mysore varieties are rich south Indian styles. They reflect the colossal cultural heritage of the regions they represent. These silk sarees are still considered sacred and worn in temples, important functions like wedding.
