Evidence states that women in the indus valley civilization used to cover themselves with a long piece of cloth, draped like a trouser. History of saree made easy and interesting, sarees origin are obscure , in part beacuse there are so few historical records in india. Yet, we know that Indians were wearing unsewn lengths of cloth draped around their bodies long before tailored cloths arrived. The traditional garment worn by Indian women is called the saree or sari. The sarees have left an indelible impression all over the world, and its value seems to increase even among the young generation, as a saree can take its own turn of fashion too.
A large part of my childhood was spent inside sari shops. I witnessed the mesmerizing quality those six yards of unstitched fabric had on my mother, and every other woman I knew. Hours and hours were spent, poring over infinite variations of intricate designs, the women feeling and teasing and fussing and cooing, the men selling the saris grinning,
I have grown up, like everyone else in middle-class Kolkata, with the six yards. I have slept on the sari, been comforted by it, been smothered and cleaned by it. My grandmother wore it every day, my aunts and my mother did as well. But then it happened. Our country changed. The early '90s saw a flurry of activity, as everything around us went through tectonic shifts. A new world, driven by technology and global mindsets, brought with it a homogeneous way of being. Global fashion swept through the world, replacing aboriginal clothing. Before we knew it, the sari was gone.
It was a yellow bandhni sari that Rii had worn one day, which ignited a beautiful spark in us. We fell in love with the sari. Suddenly, I began to see it in a completely different light. As a living, breathing source of information. A magical piece of fabric that defied time and every boundary created by humans to survive in its pristine form. We decided to make a film.
