This is a prospective observational study protocol of severe acute respiratory infection that has been developed by ISARIC – the International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium. It is available for anyone to download and use. The study focuses on cases of human infection with any emerging severe respiratory pathogen (H5N1, H7N9, nCoV etc.), including suspected and confirmed cases.

The protocol is designed to tailor to a variety of resource settings. Investigators may implement any combination of the procedures outlined in the methods to meet their available patient population and resources. The protocol can also be adapted to collect retrospective data where required. A Core Case Record Form is available to record information at admission and discharge. A Daily Record Form can also be used to collect daily information where possible. We’d like to encourage colleagues to use it even if only scarce information is available.

The intention of providing this protocol is to promote and facilitate research in emerging infections globally, and to move towards standardized data collection for high quality and comparable international results. This is an iterative process and further protocol revisions, a database with a data dictionary, and other documents will follow to support your work. The database for the core 5-page CRF is available soon, while the database for the Natural History Protocol will take a few weeks longer.

It is important to align the response to emerging infections with public health agencies. Please discuss the implementation of this protocol with your local agency, ensure that results of public health significance are reported and avoid duplication of data collection.
